Pregnancy and Lactation: Considerations in Migraineurs

Release Date: November 30, 2008
Expiration Date: November 30, 2009

Overview

Migraine is a debilitating disease which is found to be three times more prevalent in women than men. Pregnancy and lactation can be especially difficult for the female migraine patient, as treatment options can be limited. During pregnancy the majority of women patients fortunately experience cessation or improvement in their migraine headaches. This improvement may be attributed to more “even” levels of estrogen, rather than the cyclic changes women experience on a monthly basis. At the time of delivery however, a precipitous drop in estrogen can trigger the postpartum return of migraines. For the breastfeeding migraine patient, there are options which can be considered through consultation with a well-informed healthcare clinician.
